So I adore The Thing -- it is an all-time favorite film at this point. As a result, the 25th anniversary of the film last year prompted me to want to do something nifty as homage, and I started in on a pic that features the Dog Thing (which is easily the creepiest of all of the dopplegangers).
I started on something that died in the HD crash and then decided that I wanted to re-do it anyway. I'm happier with this version so far, but it needs a lot of cleanup as you can see.
This is really looking cool! I love the movie. If you haven't already, you might like reading the novella it was based on, "Who Goes There?" by John W. Campbell, Jr. It's fantastic.
I have, actually! I really enjoyed the mystery-novel-style take on it, but I kept having to laugh at the outageous number of instances MacReady's 'giant bronze hands' were mentioned. XD
Holy shit you have made some major art leaps while gone(Gone from posting art anyway)! Mostly in how refined and detailed you work now. Your composition is beautiful, particularly the play of light on The Thing as it enters the light shaft. Just...damn. I how 3-dimensional the figure is thanks to the careful attention to what would be lit and how brightly so.
I saw the movie by pure accident when I was about 6 or 7... And managed to "tune in" RIGHT on the moment, when the thing started to show itself in the dog cage *__* I was numb with fear. Anyway movie got stuck in my mind and soul since then, even though I didn't have a chance to watch it from the beginning to the end for many years - it wasn't released officially back then, and I couldn't "catch" it on the TV X) I managed to find it here in Moscow only about 4 or 5 years ago, finally - and, amusingly, can't express the joy I felt, when was holding the DVD in my hands
I really like this; that dog creeped me the hell out, through the whole beginning. But when it decided 'alright enough of this crap' and started changing, that's when it went from creepy to horrifying : | I think you captured that really well here.
